The Linguistics Department is adding a one-year Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, complementing its two-year M.A. in Applied Linguistics.
For Those Who Want to Teach English as a Foreign Language — MTESOL
“If you already know that your professional goal is in language instruction, then you can take an accelerated program of study in just two semesters with our new MTESOL (Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages),” says Dr. Hiro Oshita, associate professor and Graduate Chair in Linguistics. “This new program takes a broad perspective on English language teaching.”
This program prepares graduates to teach English as a foreign language outside of the United States.
“Requiring only two semesters of full-time study, this program permits participants to earn a professional graduate qualification within a relatively short time. And so, it is the perfect way for students who want to start a TESOL career overseas,” says Oshita.
“The program is also ideal for foreign practicing elementary, secondary, and post-secondary English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers who want to upgrade their qualifications and develop their English language teaching expertise through two residential semesters in the United States. The program is also a great fit for former and current U.S. participants in language centers or government sponsored EFL programs overseas.”

For Those Who Want to Pursue Professional Career or Ph.D. — M.A. in Applied Linguistics
In 2020, the Linguistics Department introduced a retooled M.A. in Applied Linguistics, adding a more applied emphasis to its two-year master’s degree. The credit hours were reduced from 47 to 31, allowing students more freedom to pursue their own research either in the form of a thesis or as an independent study, to build their own program through electives, or to learn new languages.
“We feel that our new Master of Arts degree in Applied Linguistics offers a strong theoretical foundation and research experience in applied linguistics with practical experience in language instruction and prepares students for doctoral studies and professional careers in this field. The completion of the degree with full-time attendance normally takes two academic years,” says Oshita.
M.A. applicants also can apply for teaching assistantships in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Swahili, and introductory Linguistics (the last limited to only those with another graduate degree in hand) as well as a graduate assistantship in academic and professional English.
Graduate Recruitment Scholarships Are Available
A few Graduate Recruitment Scholarships, which include a partial tuition scholarship (waiver of most of the Instructional Fee and all of the Non-resident Surcharge) and a small stipend sufficient to cover the remainder of tuition in exchange for a few hours of weekly service, are also offered to academically strong students.
