The Charles J. Ping Institute for the Teaching of the Humanities invites members of the Ohio University Humanities faculty to apply for a position in the Institute as the J. Richard Hamilton/Baker and Hostetler Professor of Humanities.
Applicants should be outstanding teachers with a dedication to promoting and teaching the Humanities. Evidence supporting this may include (but is not limited to): contributions to the General Education Program of the University; awards for teaching—University professorships, college teaching awards, provost’s special teaching awards, teaching enhancement awards; new or innovative course development, especially interdisciplinary courses emphasizing the humanities; levels of activity in teaching general courses for a broad range of students; participation in the University teaching colloquium or other similar programs at the college level; mentoring of fellow teachers and other activities to encourage effective teaching, such as conducting seminars or giving public presentations on teaching.
The successful candidate will be an associate or full professor teaching at Ohio University in a Humanities discipline, including such fields as: history; classics; philosophy; languages; linguistics; literature; archaeology; religious studies; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; and those aspects of the social sciences that employ historical or philosophical approaches. Consideration will be given to the applicant’s academic rank, and preference will be given to applicants from departments not already represented by the Institute’s two other distinguished professors—the Charles J. Ping Professor (currently from Classics and Religious Studies) and the James S. Reid/The Standard Products Company Professor (currently from English).
The successful candidate will be responsible for working with the Institute’s other distinguished teaching professors and fellows to develop, organize, and conduct activities that broadly support and advance the teaching of the Humanities. This includes participating in current Institute meetings and events, as well as contributing to the development and organization of new initiatives. The three distinguished teaching professors are responsible for the Ping Institute, and so hold additional meetings as necessary to review the operations and expenditures of the Institute, and undertake additional initiatives as needed to support the Institute.
The successful candidate will be appointed at the start of the 2021-2022 academic year, and will receive an annual stipend of $10,000 in addition to their department salary.

The cover letter should discuss the candidate’s achievements in teaching the Humanities, the experience and perspectives they would contribute, and how they can assist the Ping Institute to achieve its goals of supporting and advancing the teaching of the Humanities. Those applicants selected as finalists will be asked to interview online with the members of the Institute at a mutually agreeable time.
