On three successive Thursdays in February (the 7th, 14th, and 21st), Associate Professor Dr. Neil Bernstein will lead a discussion group on Ovid’s Metamorphoses as part of the Epic Book Club program at the Athens County Public Library.
The Metamorphoses, a fifteen-book epic by the Roman poet Ovid, dates from the Golden Age of Latin Literature. It is the best-known and most influential collection of Greco-Roman mythology in Western culture. Transformation (metamorphosis) is the common theme binding its poetic tales. The poem contains both comedy and tragedy, the storytelling is wonderfully rendered, and Ovid’s version of these ancient stories has inspired artists from Shakespeare to Mary Zimmerman.
This is a three-part series with 15 spots for sign-up. Each session will cover five of the fifteen books (chapters) in the poem. Each person will receive a free copy of A. D. Melville’s translation of The Metamorphoses. The Friends of the Athens Public Library have underwritten the cost of the books and the instructor.
The program will take place at the Athens branch of the county library system, starting at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 7, 14, and 21.
