Abstract: The dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cell (DSPEC) converts energy from the sun directly to fuel. An essential component of a working DSPEC device is a light-harvesting material with relatively long excited state lifetimes. Polymeric-metal composite materials have enormous potential to serve as a light harvesting material for solar energy and biomass conversion, but new and selective methodologies are needed for efficient implementation. This presentation will describe a novel approach to develop the dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cell (DSPEC) by combining polymeric chromophores and catalysts with semiconductors for biomass and solar energy conversion. Highlighted here will be the preparation, characterization, and applications of these polymeric chromophore-catalyst assemblies, which possess a variety of photophysical and photoelectrochemical properties. Current studies targeting the development of photocatalysts via hydrogen atom transfer process for biomass conversion will also be described, with the novel finding that a dye-sensitized photoelectrosynthesis cell utilizes a solar-driven catalytic conversion of woody biomass into value-added fuels and chemicals under aerobic mild conditions.
