Robert G. Ingram
Dr. Robert G. Ingram, Professor of History at Ohio University, has been awarded the Slater Fellowship by Durham University’s Institute for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (IMEM).
He will spend Spring 2020 in residence at Durham, where he will be working on a new book project titled Hobbes’s Century: England, Ireland and Religious Establishment, 1689–1742. The project explores the state’s sacralization in post-revolutionary Britain. With Stephen Taylor and Hannah Smith, he is also producing a scholarly edition of the memoirs and correspondence of John Lord Hervey (1696–1743).
At Ohio University, Ingram is also Director of the George Washington Forum on American Ideas, Politics and Institutions.
His research concerns religion and society in post-revolutionary Britain and its empire. His most recent book is Reformation Without End: Religion, Politics and the Past in Post-Revolutionary England(opens in a new window) (2018). In addition to co-editing Freedom of Speech, 1500–1850 (forthcoming, 2020), God in the Enlightenment(opens in a new window) (2016) and Between Sovereignty and Anarchy: The Politics of Violence in the American Revolutionary Era(opens in a new window) (2015), he has published Religion, Reform and Modernity in the Eighteenth Century: Thomas Secker and the Church of England(opens in a new window) (2007). He is also co-editing Parliamentary Sovereignty and Populism with Chris Barker.
