Previous and current Biological Sciences and Molecular and Cellular Biology graduate students contributed, as part of their Ph.D. dissertations, to supporting research for two patents received by Ohio University faculty.
Ohio University honored faculty, staff and student inventors during an awards ceremony Feb. 21. The Inventors Dinner recognized individuals who engaged with the university’s Technology Transfer Office over the past year to commercialize their research findings, by protecting their intellectual property through the patent process.

Dr. Stephen Bergmeier, College of Arts & Sciences, and Dr. Xiaozhuo Chen, Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, received two U.S. patents covering novel anticancer compounds that inhibit basal glucose transport, resulting in tumor suppression and new methods for the study of glucose deprivation in cancer research.

Three Previous and current Biological Sciences graduate students contributing to supporting research for both patents as part of their Ph.D. dissertations are:
- Yanyang Cao (2004 – 2009)—After graduating, Cao did her postdoc trainings at the NIH and then Albert Einstein Medical School in New York City.
- Yi Liu (2007 – 2012)—Liu did her postdoc at the Methodist Hospital of Houston and then moved on to pharmacy school.
- Pratik Shriwas (2014 -2019)
Chen is a Ph.D. graduate of Ohio University as well, having earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology from OHIO in 1988.
