The Charles J. Ping Institute for the Teaching of the Humanities presents a free one-day workshop for secondary teachers titled “The Literature, History, and Propaganda of Women’s Suffrage” with Dr. Carey Snyder and Dr. Katherine Jellison on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Ohio University.
As we approach the 100-year anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in the United States, this workshop explores the literature, history, and propaganda of women’s suffrage.
Snyder will offer historical background for the popular British novel, Suffragette Sally (1911)—highlighting the rise of militant tactics like window-breaking and hunger-striking, along with the unique challenges faced by working class women within the movement. Participants will have a chance to examine a wide array of visual propaganda, both for and against the cause.
Jellison will then discuss how the most radical members of the U.S. suffrage movement borrowed tactics and strategies from their British colleagues, and she will lead discussion of key scenes from the film Iron-Jawed Angels (2004), which deals with the closing years of the U.S. women’s suffrage campaign.
Participants will be required to purchase and read Gertrude Colmore’s novel Suffragette Sally, which is available in traditional and inexpensive digital format from Broadview Press. As part of the workshop, the Ping Institute will provide a light breakfast and a lunch for each participant at a local Athens delicatessen.
Individuals interested in earning Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for their participation in the Ping Institute workshops should have their Local Professional Development Committee contact the Ping Institute to see if CEUs can be earned.
