OHIO students and faculty recently convened to discuss the latest research in molecular biology at the annual Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) retreat. The event was organized by MCB program director and Environmental & Plant Biology professor Dr. Sarah Wyatt and featured a keynote lecture by a keynote lecture by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor Dr. Kevin Weeks, student and faculty talks, and a poster session. In his keynote lecture, Weeks discussed his group’s work characterizing the structure of RNA, which is more complex than was previously thought.

In addition, 24 graduate and undergraduate students participated in the poster session, presenting their research in a variety of disciplines that spanned the Departments of Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, and Environmental & Plant Biology. Topics included gravity perception in plants, aging and disease, and the molecular components of cell walls.

The retreat also featured an award ceremony for both faculty and student awardees. Fourteen graduate students were recognized as the 2018 recipients of the John J. Kopchick Awards. Biomedical Sciences professor Dr. Craig Nunemaker was recognized as the 2018 John J. Kopchick Faculty Support Fund for his project titled, “A Novel Dual-acting Therapeutic Compound for the Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes.” Read here for more information on this award.
