Greetings Environmental & Plant Biology alumni, students, faculty, and staff! It is my privilege to now serve as chair of this outstanding department. This fall newsletter highlights some of the great things that our faculty, staff, students, and alumni are doing. If you are not highlighted in this current newsletter, it may be because you have not let me know what remarkable things you are doing. Please feel free to email me at showalte@ohio.edu and tell me what you are up to along with your current contact information.
I want to take this opportunity to welcome three individuals who are stepping into new roles in the department. First, Dr. Stefan Little is a Visiting Assistant Professor who has joined us for the year and is teaching several plant biology courses. Second, Mary Vandeman is our new Administrative Specialist, who has taken the place vacated by Connie Vargo, who is now our new departmental administrator and our third new hire. Connie Vargo replaces Connie Pollard, who has moved on to become the new department administrator for the English Department. Did you get all that? I also want to thank Dr. Morgan Vis for her leadership and hard work over the past five years in her role as chair; she looks so much more relaxed these days.
We recently held an Environmental & Plant Biology retreat just before Fall Semester began to do some near-term and long-term planning. At the retreat, we took a departmental photo (above) of the current PBIO faculty and staff. I hope you take the time to find your favorite faculty or staff person and drop them an email or note.
I truly hope to hear from you soon about the interesting projects you’re working on, and I also ask you to consider providing some financial support to our department, big or small, as we have a number of worthy plant biology giving opportunities available for your consideration.
I also invite you to come back to Athens on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019, to participate in the College of Arts & Sciences’ Alumni-Student Networking Reception. You might come back to help students practice networking or to help with resume review. Or if you’re a recent graduate, you are welcome to come back and network to help keep your career moving. Please RSVP and let us know if you’d like to attend.
All the best,
Professor and Chair of Environmental & Plant Biology at Ohio University
