George attended Ohio University, receiving a B.S. in Geology. Soon after starting his first job out of college, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. Upon his return, the first half of his career began working for the coal industry as a registered professional geologist, where he identified and developed coal reserves from Mississippi to Pennsylvania for many of the world’s largest coal companies, including Consol and Utah International, eventually moving into management.

With the contraction of the coal industry, he obtained a master of science degree from Marshall University and for years taught hundreds of students geology, hydrogeology and other environmental science classes at West Virginia Institute of Technology and Concord University. He retired from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Mining, after years of serving as an expert in geology and hydrogeology for the agency.

Retirement didn’t stop George from pursuing his work. Until his recent illness, he ran his own consulting firm and assisted clients with a wide range of issues that required his expertise. Some of the most enjoyable work he had was testifying in court as an expert.
