I am a senior at Ohio University double-majoring in Psychology and Sociology-Criminology. I arranged for a spring internship through Roberta Roberson, coordinator for the Sociology and Sociology-Criminology Internship Program.
I am currently interning for the Athens County Sheriff’s Department.
Throughout my internship I ride around with the deputies and get to witness what they do and deal with on a day-to-day basis.
The Best Part
The best part about this internship is getting to know the deputies and everyone who works for the department. They are all genuine people who help others—and that is what I hope to do. It is refreshing to see what great people there are working in the field I hope to work in someday.
I was interested in this internship because I have had an interest in law enforcement since I was in middle school. I have grown up surrounded by great people in law enforcement, including my dad, and they would risk their lives for anyone. I have always looked up to them and hoped to someday be able to protect and serve people as they have. After spending time with the deputies of Athens County, I can say the same for them as I can for my dad and all of his friends.
I have learned so much in this short time and look forward to what is to come.
Most Surprising
What surprised me the most so far is how often the department has to deal with children. Every day of my internship, we have had to respond to a situation where a child was involved with some illegal activity.
Career Interest Confirmed!
This internship has already confirmed my interest in career choice.
I am now more interested in detective work and the FBI, so was very excited about getting to work with detectives.
After only a few days with them, I feel like I have already learned a lot about what it takes to be a detective. They help me think like a detective and that has been really cool and interesting.
