Alumni News | Scott Lutz Oversees Meteorological Services for Wright Patterson Air Force Base

Ohio University alum Scott A. Lutz ’95 is a Civil Service Meteorologist for the 88th Operations Support Squadron at Wright Patterson Air Force Base (AFB), where he oversees the base weather station and delivers mission, airfield, and staff weather services for a base servicing over 28,000 personnel, and over 1,000 flying missions per year.

Lutz graduated from Ohio University in 1995 with a Bachelors of Science in Geography (Pre-Meteorology).

At Wright Patterson, Lutz oversees the execution of a government contract for meteorological services, and his primary duties include defining government requirements and monitoring contract performance, to include accuracy, relevance, and quality assurance of products and services.

In addition to his Civil Service career, Lutz is also a Lieutenant Colonel (part-time) in the Ohio Air National Guard, where he serves as the Commander of the 164th Weather Flight at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base in Columbus. As Commander, he leads a flight of 11 personnel responsible for providing battlefield weather services for Army units and the Ohio National Guard’s Homeland Response Force, focused on domestic operations and emergency response.

Lutz was born and raised in Canton, Ohio. Following graduation, Lutz applied for, and was accepted into the Air Force’s Officers Training School, receiving his commission in March 1996 as a Communications Officer. He then served on active duty for nearly 10 years in various assignments at Keesler AFB, Mississippi, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, and Royal Air Force (RAF) Mildenhall, England. In 2005, he separated from Active Duty and joined the Ohio Air National Guard as the Staff Weather Officer for the 164th Weather Flight. In 2009, he was hired as a Civil Service Meteorologist for the 88th Operations Support Squadron at Wright Patterson AFB.

Presentation Title: Air Force and Air National Guard Weather and Career Opportunities

Abstract: Lutz will cover two main topics during his presentation, with an overall focus on operational meteorology. The first topic is an overview of typical operations and duties at an Air Force Base weather station, as well as civil service job opportunities within the Air Force. In addition, he will discuss his experience in the Ohio Air National Guard supporting Army and Homeland Response missions as well as opportunities within the Air National Guard.
