Two College of Arts & Sciences graduate students, both in Biological Sciences, took first and second place in Ohio University’s third annual 3 Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition on Feb. 21.
The 3MT® competition was developed by The University of Queensland in 2008 to help graduate students hone their communication skills. The competitions now are held at more than 600 universities and institutions in 63 countries, according to the 3MT® website.
Silvana Duran Ortiz
Silvana Duran Ortiz, a doctoral student in Biological Sciences and Molecular and Cellular Biology, won first place for her presentation on “Can we extend life- and health-span by decreasing Growth hormone action?”
She also won the People’s Choice award for doctoral students.
Cassandra Thompson
Cassandra Thompson, a master’s student in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, took second place for her presentation on “Withering Waters and Teetering Temperatures: How one frog copes with pool permanency.”
The competition at OHIO is sponsored by the Graduate College to help students learn to effectively present their work to audiences outside of their areas of specialization. Students from the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Fine Arts, Graduate College, Patton College of Education, Russ College of Engineering and Technology, Scripps College of Communication and the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs competed on topics including climate change, nanotechnology, rural health, political activism and students with disabilities.
Students presented one visual and had three minutes to describe their project to the audience and a panel of faculty and administrator judges.
