Welcome to Week 5 of The OPIE Zone Newsletter. Here are the important events happening during the fifth week of the semester.
International Conversation Hour
Tuesday, Feb. 13, from 6-7 p.m. in Jefferson Hall, Room 160
International students and domestic students meet to talk about various topics. This is a good opportunity to make friends and meet people from all over the world. Free beverages and snacks are provided. See the schedule for the whole semester.
Global Issues Discussion
Wednesday, Feb 14, from 3:05-4:05 p.m. at McCracken, Room 209
Global Issues Discussion is a workshop held as part of the Ongoing Orientation Series. Participants will tell their group members about about three important issues or problems in their country. Some examples might be poverty, discrimination, pollution, etc. OPIE Intermediate students and PDPI Participants are requires to attend.
Global Conversation Partners
Sign Up for International Conversation Partners. Benefits for signing up include:
- Meet with your partner one hour a week to practice English conversation.
- Learning about American culture.
To sign up, complete the registration form online and then wait for an email from us with information about how to meet your new partner.
Between Love and Hate Panel Discussion: Teachers Talk about Social Stratification & Race in Brazil, Feb. 15
Thursday, Feb 15, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Baker 219
This panel will feature Brazilian teachers in the OPIE PDPI program talking about important social issues in Brazil, such as race, education, and class.
Reading Lab
Every Wednesday
The Reading Lab begins this Wednesday and will be on every Wednesday except for Week 9 (Spring Break). The time and venue arrangements are as follows:
- Elementary R/W Tutoring: Gordy 156 (appointment only)
- Lower Level Lab (Elementary R/W and Intermediate R/V): Gordy 142 (noon to 5 p.m.)
- ARS Lab (100 and 101): Gordy 380 (noon to 5 p.m.)
Remember to bring your student ID to check in. Also, bring a pencil to write with.
