The Food Studies theme presents Dr. Richard W. Jones, USDA Research Plant Pathologist, discussing current research on how and why transgenic plants are developed, including work from his lab, on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 4 p.m. in Alden 319.
Various examples of everyday use of genetic engineering in medicine will be covered, along with how plant engineering can be used for medical purposes. Learn about some surprising aspects of genetic engineering, the potential pitfalls, and the future direction of GMOs.
Jones has a broad background in both fundamental and applied aspects of plant pathology. He has studied and published in a wide range of scientific fields, including termites, biological control of fungi and weeds, molecular virology and transgenic plants. He has published in more than 40 different scientific journals. He has been invited to present scientific background on transgenic plant research to government representatives of numerous foreign countries such as Taiwan, Kenya, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
