The Psychology Department Colloquium series presents Dr. Richard Smith of the University of Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 25, at 11:50 a.m. in Porter Hall 102. His talk is on “Exposed Moral Hypocrisy and Schadenfreude Make Jolly Good Bedfellows.”
Smith will describe a set of studies examining why seeing people suffer because of their exposed moral hypocrisy can produce strong schadenfreude.
“The first study demonstrates the basic effect. The second shows the importance of the match between the exposed immoral action and the prior moralizing,” he says. T”he third shows that a hypocrite’s prior willingness to punish others for behavior that he or she is also secretly doing brings special pleasure when we see this hypocrisy exposed.”
