After graduating from the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio University with a B.A. in Sociology-Criminology and B.A. in History, John Boman ’07 followed the advice of Tom Vander Ven, Professor of Sociology, and attended graduate school to pursue a Ph.D. in Criminology at the University of Florida.

After graduating with a doctorate in 2013, he took a job as an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Wyoming, then moved back to Ohio to start as an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Bowling Green State University this Fall. Most importantly, he continues to love research, teaching, and (generally) life as a university faculty member.

Boman’s research interests focus primarily on the ways through which interpersonal connections influence deviant behavior, crime, and substance use over the life-course. His research places a particular emphasis on how peers and friends impact an individual’s participation in criminal behavior. Some of his current and past projects investigate how friends can influence crime during reentry, friendship quality, substance abuse, construct validation and measurement, and the social costs of energy production and how it relates to crime.

His wife, Stephanie (Ksionzyk) Boman ’07 (B.A. Anthropology, minors in Political Science and History), works as Assistant to the Dean of the Bowling Green Graduate College. They recently bought a house in Bowling Green and are enjoying the area with their (very) high-energy dog, Georgia.

His OHIO Experience

Aside from receiving the advice that guided him into his career, Boman says his experience at Ohio University is how he discovered his passion about criminological research and got him thinking about how to help the criminal justice system from the research end.
