Neurons will fire across Lake Hope Lodge on Oct. 7 as Ohio University’s neuroscientists convene to discuss their research in the first annual “Neuroscience Research Day.”
The event, which was contrived by a team of faculty members, graduate students and undergraduate students, is designed to unite members of OHIO’s Neuroscience Program, which includes researchers from the departments of Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, and Physics & Astronomy.
Neuroscience Program director Dr. Daewoo Lee, Professor of Biological Sciences, said he hopes the event will help to establish a communication platform between researchers – both students and faculty – who share common scientific interests.
“We’re all scattered around (campus), and sometimes it’s not always easy to get these people together,” Lee said. “It’s a good opportunity to get to know one another.”
Neuroscience Research Day will open with a keynote lecture from Ohio State University professor Anthony Brown, who has received international recognition for his work on neurofilaments and axonal transport. Brown is a former OHIO professor of Biological Sciences, and he collaborates with OHIO Physics & Astronomy professor and neuroscience member Dr. Peter Jung.
Following Brown’s lecture, six OHIO faculty members in the Neuroscience Program will present talks on their research findings. Additionally, a poster session will feature work conducted by graduate and undergraduate students in the program. Three monetary awards (a $200 grand prize and two $100 prizes) will be presented for the top posters to support student travel.
The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lake Hope Lodge in MacArthur, Ohio, approximately 30 minutes from campus. Meals and transportation will be provided. The event is open to OHIO students with a background in neuroscience, and all students in the Neuroscience Program are encouraged to present at the poster session.
“Lake Hope Lodge is a great place to enjoy the beautiful landscape of Hocking Hills,” Lee said. “We will see not only the wonder of nature, but the wonder of the brain.”
All interested participants should RSVP to Dr. Mitchell Day, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, at daym1@ohio.edu by Sept. 28. For a schedule and further information, visit the Neuroscience Research Day Facebook page.
