Editor’s Note: The Happy Beginnings series features recent College of Arts & Sciences graduates who are getting started in careers, graduate school and service.

Emily Starkey ’15 is a legal support specialist with Franklin County Prosecutors Office in the criminal division.

After graduating from the College of Arts & Sciences with a B.A. in Sociology-Criminology and a minor in Psychology, Starkey worked as an administrative assistant for a CPA firm, then as a Youth Counselor at The Buckeye Ranch.

In her current role, she is responsible for the paperwork that gets inmates from jail to court for arraignments and other court dates. She also works on subpoenas and minor legal tasks assigned by her supervisor.

Starkey likes that this job gives her a perspective on the legal and court system. Her goal is to be a domestic violence victim advocate, probably in a rural area.

‘What I Want to End up Doing as a Career’

“Ohio University helped me realize what I want to end up doing as a career,” Starkey says.

“My internship senior year was definitely a piece of what Ohio University gave me that helped shape what I’m doing now. I know that it’ll take a bit to get where I want to be and that’s okay. At OHIO I learned who I want to help.”

She worked with Roberta Roberson, Associate Lecturer of Sociology, to get her internship with the Athens County Prosecutor’s Office Victims Assistance Program.

“I appreciate the many people who supported me during my time at school and gave me the opportunities that will help me in reaching my goals.”
