Award-Winning Poet Roy Bentley reads from Starlight Taxi on Oct. 31, at 7 p.m., at the Athens Public Library.
Roy Bentley ’79, ’81MA has won 11 major awards for his poetry over the past 27 years of his career as a professional poet. Now he has a new cycle of his poetry out just this year, Starlight Taxi, winner of the Blue Lynx Prize.
Bentley was reared in Ohio’s Appalachian Foothills in Newark, by parents he identifies as Appalachian in culture. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ohio University at Athens, including an M.A. in English from the College of Arts & Sciences.
He has had a parallel career as a teacher, giving courses in creative writing, communications, fiction and poetry. He has taught at such schools as Dennison University at Granville and Hocking College. The awards he has garnered range from the Ohio Arts Council to the National Endowment for the Arts to the White Pine Press Poetry Prize. Prior to his career as a teacher and poet he served in the Air Force.
