Fun with liquid nitrogen? Beating back gravity? Sharks with lasers? It’s all there to explore at the Ohio University Department of Physics and Astronomy Open House on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Clippinger Laboratories on the Athens campus.
“There are a lot of cool and unexpected things in nature. In putting together the shows, hallway activities and tours, we’re always looking for the fun and the unexpected, and we even sneak in a little physics!” says Dr. Mark Lucas, Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy.
“With the hovercraft, kids learn that high pressure air spread out over a large area will let you float on a cushion of air, which makes for a fun ride! With the water rocket, as the water rocket pushes the water out the bottom, the water pushes the rocket up … and up … and up!”
The Open House features hands-on shows, demos, and lab tours, including:
- Fun With Liquid Nitrogen
- What NOT To Do With Your Microwave
- Levitation: Beating Back Gravity
- The Power of Air: Ping Pong Ball Cannons and Pencils Through Plywood
- “Sharks with Lasers on Their Heads”
- Fun with Physics and Figure Skating
- Accelerator Lab tour, STM tour, Optical Tweezers tour
- How to Choose a Telescope Interactive Display
… and much more!
This event is free and open to the public of all ages. Families are especially welcome. For more information, visit http://www.phy.ohiou.edu/openhouse or contact Mark Lucas at 740-593-1718 or lucasm@ohio.edu.
