Dr. Kathryn Flinn
The Environmental & Plant Biology Colloquium Series presents Dr. Kathryn Flinn on “200 years of changes in the vegetation of northeast Ohio” on Friday, April 7, at 11:50 a.m. in Porter Hall 104.
Flinn is an Assistant Professor in the Biology and Geology Department at Baldwin Wallace University.
Abstract: To ensure that ecological restoration efforts result in a landscape representative of regional biodiversity, we need to put our conservation plans in a long-term and large-scale context. My students and I are building a foundation of knowledge about the vegetation of northeast Ohio on which we can base specific and defensible restoration targets. We are characterizing the historical vegetation of the region using 1790s surveys, comparing this to current vegetation as represented in the Cleveland Metroparks, and testing hypotheses about which factors have driven the changes we observe and how relationships between vegetation and environment have changed over time.
