Ohio University alum Justin R. McCaulley ’01 is this year’s “visiting professional” in Political Science.

In Spring 2017, McCaulley will teach a one-credit course, POLS 4900 Special Topics in Political Science, which provides a behind-the-curtain view from a lobbyist’s perspective of the roles of and relationships between business, government, and society.

The course emphasizes the strategic importance of social responsibility and ethics. Issues include sustainability, community relations, and the global environment.

“This is a hands-on course that will help you integrate what you have learned in college with real world dilemmas you will face in working life,” says Dr. Judith Grant, Professor and Chair of Political Science. “The course includes dinners and career counseling in fields of lobbying, public relations, government, and politics. This is a one-time only course. Don’t miss it!”

About Justin McCaulley

Justin R. McCaulley is president of McCaulley&Company, a consulting firm focused on communications solutions and opportunity development.  Justin is an experienced consultant in political and government arenas, serving corporations, local governments, higher education, and nonprofit organizations.

Justin works with McCaulley&Company clients to develop customized and innovative solutions which meet their enterprise goals. His expertise in the legislative, regulatory, procurement, grants/incentives, and budget/appropriations processes has provided his clients with an exceptional record of success in securing favorable policy or funding for programs, technology development, and capital projects. McCaulley maintains excellent relationships with federal and state legislators and their senior staff, as well as agency officials, which enables him to advocate effectively for clients and their causes. McCaulley&Company puts those relationships to work for clients, opening doors and delivering insight that had been previously out of reach.

Prior to McCaulley&Company, McCaulley was director of the federal advocacy practice in the Washington, D.C., office of a government relations firm he co-founded in 2002. There, he impacted federal policy on behalf of client interests and delivered tens of millions of dollars in federal, state, and local funding for client projects.

McCaulley studied at Ohio University from 1997 to 2001 and graduated with a B.A. in Political Science. He says the biggest mistake he made during his time at Ohio University was graduating in four years. (He should have stretched it out for the fifth-year “victory lap” like his friends did).

Since graduation, McCaulley has remained committed to Ohio University, serving as president of the Cleveland alumni chapter and founding vice president of the alumni society for public affairs. He also served as the youngest member of the Executive Advisory Board to the College of Arts & Sciences and was awarded the college’s distinguished young alumnus award in 2014.

McCaulley is committed to higher education. He received his Master of Business Administration from Cleveland State University in 2013 and is an adjunct professor, currently teaching classes in the Business and Political Science departments at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio.  He regularly speaks to political science students about career paths in government and politics at Ohio University.

McCaulley grew up in Brunswick, Ohio, and now resides in Rocky River on the West Side of Cleveland. He gives back to his community by serving as a board member of the Rocky River Public Library and volunteering for the Cleveland chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association and American Diabetes Association. He also served on the board of PlayhouseSquare Partners, co-founded the young professionals group at the Cleveland Museum of Art called “Column & Stripe,” and led a leadership development nonprofit for Cuyahoga County’s most-promising high school kids.

McCaulley splits his time between Washington, D.C., Cleveland, and client facilities across the United States, working closely with clients and government officials. In his spare time, he is a grateful husband, life-long guitar player, frustrated golfer, avid reader, trivia junkie, hopeful Browns fan, and karaoke rock star.
