Vice President for Research and Creative Activity, Russ College of Engineering and Technology, Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and Physics & Astronomy Department present Joseph Jachinowski on “The Confluence of Superconductivity and High-Energy Physics in the Quest to Cure Cancer” on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 4:10 p.m. in Walter 245 .

Jachinowski is an Ohio University alumnus and CEO of Mevion Medical System.

Abstract: Jachinowski is chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors for Mevion Medical Systems. The company developed the world’s first single-room proton therapy system for cancer therapy.

Jachinowski is an alumnus of Ohio University’s Russ College of Engineering and Technology and has been named a 2015 recipient of the institution’s Konneker Medal for Commercialization and Entrepreneurship.

During his special colloquium, Jachinowski will discuss the history and future of radiation therapy for cancer treatment. Although proton therapy has been shown to be a very effective form of treatment for certain diseases, the use of protons has been very limited—only a few percent of the patients who are treated with radiation—due to the high-cost, large-size and operational complexity of constructing an accelerator facility of sufficient energy to treat the different forms of the disease. This seminar will present a brief introduction into the development of a superconducting synchrocyclotron and its clinical application in the treatment of cancer that has the promise of making proton therapy a much more widely used treatment modality.
