“The skills Ohio University’s Geography Department offered me have been pertinent and useful in my career,” says Eliza (Clarke) Thrush ’09 (M.A. Geography).
“As a student, I focused on the regulatory process for wetlands, but also was very interested in city/environment interaction and land use planning. After completing a master’s degree in Geography in 2009, I was hired as an environmental consultant to do primarily stream and wetland assessments. While working as a consultant, I also began doing NEPA transportation planning work for roadway projects.
“In 2013, I moved to the City of Columbus to work in land use planning, where I handled zoning and council variance applications. In 2015, I transferred to Columbus’ Public Service Department to return to transportation planning, where I now work on traffic calming projects, transportation planning policy, and public involvement initiatives. The critical thinking framework learned and used in the Geography program has been a great background for my work today.”
