Ohio Innocence Project Director and Exonerees to Speak Feb. 9

Representatives from the Ohio Innocence Project, one of the most successful organizations in the nation for exonerating innocent prisoners, will speak in Walter Rotunda on Feb. 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. for a talk on “The Ohio Innocence Project: From Death Row to Freedom.”

Ohio Innocence Project graphicDirector and Co-founder Mark Godsey and two exonerees, Ricky Jackson and Dean Gillispie will speak about the work done by the Ohio Innocence Project and their specific exoneration cases.

Godsey has led the project to become one of the most successful of its kind in the nation, to date freeing 20 innocent Ohio inmates, including the well-known cases of Clarence Elkins, Chris Bennett, and Raymond Towler, and others.

Jackson and Gillispie will discuss their own cases and their exoneration, and Godsey will speak about his work on their cases and with the Ohio Innocence Project generally. Jackson was exonerated in November 2014, after spending nearly 40 years in prison, including time on death row, for a murder he did not commit. His exoneration received worldwide press. Gillispie served 20 years in prison for a string of rapes he did not commit. His case is featured in the best-selling book False Justice: Eight Myths that Convict the Innocent.

Besides his work with the Ohio Innocence Project, which was founded in 2003, Godsey is a Professor of Law at the University of Cincinnati College of Law. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Innocence Network, and is an editor of the Wrongful Convictions Blog, the leading website on the subject of wrongful convictions. He is a columnist on wrongful conviction issues for the Huffington Post, is frequently quoted in news sources such as the New York Times, Newsweek, and the Wall Street Journal. He is also often consulted on innocence and wrongful conviction issues on national television.

This event is sponsored by the Center for Law, Justice and Culture and Students for Law, Justice and Culture.
