The Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics (INPP) presents Johannes Kirscher, of  the Hebrew University, presenting “On the Correlation of low – energy Observables in light nuclei” on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at at 3:15 p.m. in Clippinger Laboratory, Room 354.

Abstract: In contrast to the Newtonian gravitational interaction, which yields quite accurate predictions even forsystems of more than 4 planets, most attempts to describe nuclear systems of more than two particles failed if based solely on two-body forces. I will present two examples of phenomena in few-nucleon systems which cannot be explained by data on their constituents. Namely, the bound state spectrum of the three-nucleon system and a resonance phenomenon in four-nucleon scattering.

The universal aspects of light nuclear systems, which can be related to peculiarities of their subsystems, contrast those distinctive properties. In particular, I will show correlations between the three- and four-nucleon bound-state spectra, two- and three-nucleon scattering properties, and a conjectured relation between four- and five-nucleon S- matric poles. I will conclude by relating the calculations to the effort of deriving properties of light nuclei directly from quantum chromodynamics. The presentation will include introductions to the effective field theory without pions, as the appropriate interaction, and the refined resonating group, as the computational algorithm for a numerical solution of the few-body problem.
