From Dr. Julie White
Professor of Political Science, Director of the Center for Law, Justice & Culture, and Director of Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies
Welcome back! I am very excited to be stepping into the role of CLJC Director for the upcoming year! The Center has earned its reputation for energetic faculty-student engagement– intellectual and professional, academic and activist. Over the years I have found that energy very contagious! Many of the most inspiring students with whom I have had the good fortune to work are “CLJCers.” Last week’s visit with the Ohio Innocence Project was my first introduction to the current cohort of student CLJC leadership. What an impressive group!!
Over the summer, the Center ran its second virtual and sixth annual Summer Law & Trial Institute with twenty high school students. Directed by Larry Hayman, Esq. the program introduces students to law and justice challenges in the 21st century while giving them exposure to legal careers and introducing them to college. Also over the summer, Larry Hayman began a new dual role with CLJC and will now serve as Assistant Director and Pre-Law Advisor at CLJC and with The ACE, working with students interested in pursuing law school and government and public policy careers.
Our academic community consists of 23 faculty, 36 graduate students in the M.A. in Law, Justice & Culture program, a robust cohort of Law, Justice and Culture undergraduate certificate students, and 7 new first year students in the Early Assurance Program (EAP).
Like all of you, I had hoped that COVID would be clearly in our rearview by the start of our fall together. That has not happened. But the vaccines have made a difference; in addition to continuing some of our on-line work, we are looking forward to COVID appropriate in-person meet-ups with you all . We will update you regularly about what that will look like.
