Spring 2021 | New Forensic Studies Certificate Takes Multi-disciplinary Approach

Ohio University offers a new Forensic Studies Certificate that explores the scientific components of criminal investigation and criminal justice processes through a multi-disciplinary lens.

The Forensics Studies Certificate is open to any students affiliated with any Ohio University campus. All three required courses are offered this spring on the Athens and regional campuses:

“This certificate provides a conversation and support space for undergraduates from a variety of colleges and majors,” says Dr. Michelle O’Malley, certificate director and assistant professor of instruction in Linguistics, based in Athens.

“The interdisciplinary nature of this certificate makes it attractive to students from disparate academic backgrounds while also attracting students who have grown up locally and who may plan to remain living and working in the Central Appalachian region,” says Sonja Rawn, J.D., associate professor of instruction law enforcement technology (Ohio University Chillicothe / University College).

The certificate provides useful training for success in local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, municipal offices, social support settings, and businesses of all types. It also prepares students for further study in graduate programs specific to forensic studies or in law school.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in recent years, has noted that, especially in rural areas where there is a high demand for professionals with training of this type, this high demand could be met by Ohio University students and graduates who have completed an undergraduate degree along with a certificate in Forensic Studies.
