The ACLU of Ohio University is hosting a Listening Campaign on behalf of the ACLU of Ohio on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.

The American Civil Liberties Union is a nonprofit organization that was created to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties of all Americans through litigation, education and lobbying. To date, the ACLU has more than 2 million members and has been a part of landmark cases such as Brown v. Board of Education, Roe v. Wade, and others.

During the next four months, the ACLU of Ohio is embarking on a season of deep listening, also knowing as a Listening Campaign. Their goal in this campaign is to “…to engage our organizing base, supporters, members and staff in deep and meaningful conversations about the hopes, dreams, and needs of the moment and how we can best respond to them.” Across the state, various community conversations will be held with the hope of having heard from at least 1,000 Ohioans by the end of the campaign.

On Sept. 10, the ACLU of Ohio University is hosting an hour-long community conversation, to help the ACLU of Ohio reach their goal and hear from the people of Southeast Ohio. During the event community member will be broken up into small groups to respond to prompts about Ohio laws, criminal justice, voting, and more. This event will bring in the voices of OHIO students, faculty, staff, and members of the greater Athens community.

“I truly believe this campaign will help us guide our efforts toward doing things that matter to the OU, and greater Athens community,” says Micaela Beatham-Garcia, director of the ACLU-OU, who believes this event is a great starting place for the organization. “It will help us create a road map for the semester, and we want people to feel heard.”

The ACLU-OU encourages everyone to attend the event, because they believe each person’s perspective is invaluable.
