Ohio University graduate student Alexandra Monaco was named Outstanding Graduate Second-Year Student by the Sociology & Anthropology Department.
In addition, she was awarded the College of Arts & Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award.
Monaco is completing an M.A. in Sociology and was nominated by Dr. Thomas Vander Ven, Professor of Sociology. She defended her thesis in March.
“Her exploratory study of college students’ perceptions of the #MeToo campaign was well-conceived and carefully executed. Alex’s efforts to design a theoretically informed and ethically sound study were impressive,” Vander Ven says. “Her study is one of the first to examine the effects of #MeToo. I believe it will be an important contribution to the literature.
“Finally, she has demonstrated tremendous leadership and collegiality. ‘You should talk to Alex about that’ is the most common piece of advice among the first- and second-year graduate students. She has happily provided support to all her peers. Her leadership was critical to the success of our program,” he says.
“Over the course of her two years in the M.A. program, Alex has distinguished herself as a dedicated and effective instructor, a careful and insightful researcher, and an enthusiastic mentor and advocate for fellow graduate students,” he says.
“She has developed into a passionate and popular instructor. She received strong student evaluation scores last fall and has been committed to improving her course delivery. I met with her weekly throughout the year to discuss teaching issues and challenges. She is open to critiques and willing to make changes to improve the learning experience.
“This spring she successfully met the challenge to transition her course to online delivery,” he adds.
