Jamey Seals, a junior majoring in forensic chemistry, was named the 2020 recipient of the James and Harriet Tong Forensic Chemistry Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded each year to a student showing a “strong aptitude as a forensic chemist.” In addition to maintaining a high GPA, Seals has been involved in many activities that show his passion for his major and forensics.

During the summer of 2019, he interned with the Kentucky State Highway Patrol Northern Lab. His supervisor, Jeanna Oxenham, commented in her assessment that “Jamey was intuitive and helpful” and that she “really appreciated his responsible behavior.”

During the Fall Semester 2019, Seals was the Learning Community Leader for the UC 1900: Forensic Chemistry Learning Community with Dr. Becky Barlag, instructor and Director of the B.S. Forensic Chemistry program.

“Jamey is an excellent role model for our first-year students. He helps them with their coursework, planning their schedules, and adjusting to college life, and he is a true leader in the development of a community among the students in our program and at Ohio University as a whole,” Barlag says.

Seals also has worked this spring under the direction of instructor Dr. Sonja Rawn as a laboratory assistant for the LET 3500:  Criminalistics and Criminal Investigation for Forensic Chemists lecture and laboratory.

“Jamey is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and dependable lab assistant. He is a great mentor of the forensic chemistry majors,” Rawn says.

“Great job, and a big Thank You to Jamey Seals for being an outstanding student, mentor, and deserving recipient of this scholarship,” adds Barlag.
