When money is tight, explore the world around you and take a day trip! This spring break, my girlfriend, Denielle, and I spent the day together partaking in cheap, wholesome fun.
We love taking day trips because there is so much to see and experience close to home. We’ve visited numerous waterfalls, animal sanctuaries, museums, hiking spots, places of historical significance, and small towns where their charm and character have much to offer throughout our long relationship. And who can forget the food?! All of these were located within three hours of our home in north-central Ohio.
This spring break we were heading to Columbus for the 30th anniversary tour of “Empire,” an album released by Queensrÿche certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA, sung by original singer Geoff Tate.
I am an Anthropology/Archaeology student at O.U. and love to visit historical sites. Within walking distance, was the Shrum Mound. Named after the owner of the property, this large burial mound was built overlooking the Scioto River during the Adena cultural period about 2,000 years ago. I’ve never seen a mound of this size before and can only wonder what the area looked like before other mounds in the area were destroyed for farming and settlement.
Not far from here, was Hayden Falls. Hidden underneath a four-lane road is a 35-foot waterfall that feeds into the nearby Scioto River. It is always nice to see a bit of intact nature amongst the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan area.
Needless to say, everything was amazing and fun! For us, it is never about the distance or extravagance of a trip, but the quality of the time we share together…. And hey, the food was incredible! We had an exorbitant amount of cookies and milk at Great American Cookie because we are adults and deemed it okay to do so.
