Esther Aulis-Cabrera is currently interning at the U.S. House of Representative in Washington, D.C., where she is connecting her passion for Latinx issues with real-world career experience.
“Interning in this office has been a very rewarding process. At home, in Cincinnati, and on campus I am an advocate for Latinx achievement and advancement. Working for the first Puerto Rican Congresswoman and longest serving Latina congresswoman has given me the opportunity to learn and connect my passions with my career aspirations in politics,” says the Ohio University sophomore double majoring in English Creative Writing and Political Science.
Aulis-Cabrera is a legislative intern in Rep. Nydia Velàzquez’s D.C. office. Velàzquez, D-New York, represents the 7th New York Congressional District.
“Interning on the Hill has been such a rewarding achievement, and the early career training I will most benefit from. While my tasks may be small in comparison to the great legislative work my supervisors do, my research and constituent communication are equally as important in this field. I am very excited to see where this will take me,” she added.
OHIO Capital Internship Program
Aulis-Carbera’s internship is made possible through OHIO Capital Internship Program and her journey was guided with help from OHIO’s Career and Leadership Development Center.
“During my freshman year I took a class with Jodi Pavol, OHIO’s Career and Leadership Development Center Associate Director for Partnerships, where I was not only introduced to the service of the CLDC, but I was guided through the creation of a career plan. Through this class I participated in the FOUNDATIONS Program and became a Pepsi Scholar. These were the experiences that helped build confidence in my skills and in the professional person I am.”
“I, of course, am very thankful for my Alpha Psi Lambda Fraternity Familia Network. Through the encouragement and mentorship of my hermanos and hermanas at OHIO and elsewhere, I was able to apply and engage with the Congressional offices that I wanted to work in,” she says.
