The Environmental & Plant Biology Colloquium Series presents Carrie Gilbert on “Reflections on Decision Making and Management of Public Forestlands” on Friday, Feb. 7, at 11:50 a. m.  in Porter 104.

Gilbert has been the Forest Supervisor on the Wayne National Forest since early September of 2019. Prior to this position, she served as a coordinator in policy and planning in the Forest Service Eastern Region Regional Office in Milwaukee, Wis.; Deputy Forest Supervisor on the Allegheny and Mt. Hood National Forests (Pennsylvania and Oregon, respectively); Planning Chief for the Bureau of Forestry in Pennsylvania; and a Botany Specialist and Forester early in her career.

Through her diverse background working at both the federal and state levels for conservation public land agencies, she’s gained appreciation for the complexities and nuances behind how decisions are made in the management of public forestlands. While laws and regulations are the primary guiding principles for public land management, a considerable amount of discretion, public sentiment, and ecological or sociopolitical challenges also weigh into decision making.

Gilbert will attempt to provide a broad overview of what she’s experienced throughout her career and how it has shaped her holistic view of conservation management and public lands. She’ll also relate this view to the current activities happening on Ohio’s only national Forest, the Wayne National Forest.
