Jeff King ’11 ’12M graduated with his B.A. in Sociology-Criminology and subsequently earned his M.A. in Sociology from the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University
King is currently a medical device sales representative with Zimmer Biomet, a medical device trading company founded by leading medical device manufacturer Justin Zimmer. These devices aid medical professions working to advance the future of joint replacements, bone and skeletal repair, as well as many other procedures.
At Zimmer Biomet, he specializes in surgical equipment and spends most of his time in the field in the operating room. He says that “the best thing about this field is that there’s always something interesting going on in the operating room, being able to see some incredible procedures, and working with the amazing doctors, nurses, or staff who perform them. Our products can improve both the caregiver, but also very importantly patients’ lives.”
King has been in medical sales for about six years now, having the opportunity to travel from Chicago, to Madison, Wis., to his current home in Cincinnati. He appreciates the company culture in medical device sales, but especially the one at Zimmer Biomet. King appreciates the competition between the companies as he was a former athlete while here at Ohio and notes that “at Zimmer Biomet we have a great one. This is a very competitive field, so being a former athlete at Ohio, it’s a great profession to keep the love of competition going against competing companies.”
Not only does King utilize his skills from being a former athlete at Zimmer Biomet, but he also works as a strength and conditioning coach.
“I’m very thankful to be in the med device field, but I am also a strength and conditioning coach, which is a big passion of mine. When my work schedule allows for it, I am able to coach and train different people and athletes to help achieve their goals in strength and conditioning, nutrition, lifestyle.”
His OHIO Experience
While King was here at Ohio he took classes in several disciplines including his sociology/criminology major classes ranging from business classes to health and science. While pursuing his M.A., he was a part of a graduate committee with Dr. Christine Mattley and Dr. Ursula Castellano. The head of the committee was Dr. Thomas Vander Ven, who he mentions was his greatest influence in his decision furthering his education and professional career.
King was a member of the OHIO football team, which also helped prepare him for life after college. He reflects on the relationships, challenges and discipline that came with playing football and that gave him skills that he is thankful for.
He attributes a combination of factors to his success in preparing for what he does today. Part of that success is because of the concepts he learned as a sociology major, like studying social behavior, problems and interactions. The major gave him tools and resources he can apply to business situations such as making sales. The foundation he gained through being a member of the football team and through pursuing his B.A. and M.A. were also big influences on his life.
