Career Week | STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Industry Panel, Jan. 29

Ohio University students are invited to a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Industry Panel featuring three Ohio University alumni from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on  Jan. 29 at the CoLab in Alden Library 301.

Light refreshments will be offered after the panel.

This event is part of the College of Arts & Sciences Career & Networking Week, Jan. 27 to Feb. 1, 2020.

Dustin Starkey, portrait

Dustin Starkey

Ohio University alumnus Dustin Starkey is the program manager for Global Analytical, Food Safety and External Engagement for Abbott Laboratories’ nutrition business.

He earned a B.S. in Forensic Chemistry from the College of Arts & Sciences at Ohio University, followed by a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati, and an MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was named to the College of Arts & Sciences Notable Alumni in 2017. (And he was in the Marching 110.)

His primary responsibility is working closely with public and private organizations, government agencies, universities, and laboratories to ensure product quality and safety through use of globally harmonized, fit-for-purpose test methods and standards. He is a member of AOAC International and active participant in AOAC Stakeholder Panel for Infant Formula and Adult Nutritionals, representing Abbott on stakeholder and advisory panels. Additionally, he is an active participant in Codex Alimentarius Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling, advocating for endorsement of globally harmonized, fit-for-purpose standard methods for label-claim nutrients.

Starkey began his career in 2002 as a research scientist with Abbott in Columbus, Ohio, where he spent 10-plus years developing, validating and transferring analytical test methods for label-claim nutrients in infant and adult nutritional products. In 2013, he became site manager of Abbott’s office at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Research Park, where he managed operations and facilities and led student interns and projects for R&D, Regulatory Affairs, and Operations. From 2016 to 2017, Starkey was Senior Manager, Operations Professional Development Program, leading global strategy and oversight for Abbott’s marquee rotational leadership program for early career, high-potential employees.

Cynthia Calhoun

OHIO alumna Cynthia Calhoun is an aerospace engineer supervisor serving as the deputy chief of the Program and Project Assurance Division at the NASA John H. Glenn Research Center in Cleveland.

She has a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Ohio University and a master’s degree in Information Systems Management from Duquesne University.

She is responsible for assuring NASA systems are of high quality and operate safely, to ensure a successful mission for NASA programs and projects. This includes overseeing an annual budget of 14 million dollars and a staff of 58 employees who evaluate the safety, reliability, and quality of aeronautics and space systems fabrication, and technology or research and development activities that could evolve into space systems.

She has authored and presented numerous national and international publications. She also received numerous awards throughout her career for her accomplishments, including the NASA Exceptional Service Medal for Software Engineering and the NASA Equal Employment Opportunity Medal for her STEM outreach efforts with underrepresented and underserved students.

She is a former member of the Ohio University Alumni Association Board of Directors and a current Ohio University Foundation Trustee.

Stephanie Morrison

OHIO alumna Stephanie Morrison is a labeling specialist and graphic designer at Abbott Laboratories.

Morrison graduated from the School of Visual Communications (VisCom) at Ohio University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication, majoring in Commercial Photography. She recently earned a Master in Business Administration from Ohio University, specializing in Business Analytics.

Immediately following graduation, she moved to Chicago to work as a TV and print producer for Jeff Sciortino Photography. Specializing in pharmaceutical and lifestyle advertising, she produced work for many large organizations such as the NFL, McDonalds, and Samsung.

Morrison managed nearly 1,000 campaigns in Chicago before moving back to Columbus, OH, and shifting her career focus into graphic design. She has been working with Abbott Laboratories since 2015 as the package designer for brands such as Similac, EAS, and Pedialyte, acting as the sole designer on Pedialyte for nearly two years, and will begin her transition into a project leader within the Pedialyte team in 2020.
