Dr. Anthony S. Stender, Assistant Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry at Ohio University, was recently invited to present a talk at the Midwestern Universities Analytical Chemistry Conference (MUACC). This year’s conference was held Nov. 7 – 9 at Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis.
Stender first attended this conference when it was hosted by Ohio University in 2017.
“I really enjoy the MUACC speaking format,” Stender said. “Speakers are encouraged to give 12-minute chalk talks instead of a PowerPoint presentation. The topics discussed are quite diverse but are largely focused on the analytical nature of analytical chemistry. This year’s conference was particularly informative for me, because the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) sponsored a special session on their publication and peer-review process. I haven’t had much experience working with RSC, but now that I understand more about their publication process and their readership, I plan to submit more papers to them in the future.”
Stender’s talk was titled “What is the right software platform for analyzing data?” As Stender explained, “It’s a question I’ve been exploring for several years now, and it’s an ongoing discussion that I have involved my students in. The main points of my talk were that students should be skilled at using multiple data analysis platforms, and secondly, it’s important to work with data analysis software that is considered valuable by employers. I was somewhat surprised by how many people came up to me afterwards to discuss the software they currently use, but my talk apparently struck the right chord with many of the attendees, which led to some highly enjoyable discussions during the breaks between sessions.”
In addition to speaking at the conference, Stender was awarded a travel grant by the organizers of the conference, and he presided as chair over one of the sessions.
