This year, Ohio University’s Plant Club has a lot of fun, educational activities and other plans in store, as well as new officers to welcome for its 2019-20 run.

New officers include President Alberta Dempsey, Vice President Laura Wimer, Secretary and Social Media Chair Sarah Maracz, and Treasurer Becca Wagenknecht.

In a recent activity, the Plant Club assisted Dr. Rebecca Snell with a prairie restoration project at the Ridges, putting in more than 160 plants on Oct. 20.

They also helped clean up a garden bed below Baker Center, had a pumpkin carving event, and went to see “Fantastic Fungi,” a documentary playing at the Athena. Future activity ideas in the works include a project to help conserve another prairie, at Strouds Run, by removing redbuds, which shade out prairie plants, and a pre-holiday plant exchange.

Events for spring semester are not finalized, but a workshop on making natural dyes, a workday at the OHIO Student Farm in the spring, a garlic mustard pull with the grad students, and possibly an aquatic plant or propagation seminar are being discussed.

Students who are interested in becoming involved in the Plant Club can contact the club through OrgSync or reach out to Dr. Kim Thompson at thompsk3@ohio.edu.
