Dr. Alycia Stigall, Professor of Geological Sciences at Ohio University, presented the 2019 Wilson Lecture at the Centre for Earth and Evolution Dynamics at the University of Oslo, Norway in September.
The center is one of the premier research institutes globally for research about the earth’s interior and reconstructing former continental positions. The Wilson Lecture Series honors the pioneering work of J. Tuzo Wilson in the development of modern plate tectonic theory.
Stigall’s lecture was titled “The influence of paleogeography on species invasions, mass extinctions, and biotic radiations: lessons for today from oceans of the past.” She spoke about her research, which studies how the positions of tectonic plates in the past influenced the evolution of marine species through time as well as how understanding the distribution of ancient marine organisms can aid with fine-tuning reconstructions of plate positions and oceanic circulation.
During her visit to Oslo, Stigall also collaborated with geoscientists from CEED, paleontologists at the Oslo Museum of Natural History, and study outcrops of Ordovician age rocks and fossils in the field.
