The New York Times quotes Dr. Katherine Jellison, Professor & Chair of History at Ohio University, in a story headlined “Melania Trump Celebrates, With Superlatives, ‘Be Best’ Campaign.”
You know, God is smart,” Eric Bolling, a host for the Sinclair Broadcast Group who teams up with “Be Best” on anti-opioids efforts, told the attendees. “She or he will continue to shine a bright light on your path for the next six years as first lady, the most important and accomplished first lady in American history, full stop.”
It was the type of superlative common in the Trump White House, and one that historians quickly fact-checked. Katherine Jellison, a professor at Ohio University who studies first ladies, said that the American public would need about “30 more years” to place Mrs. Trump in history’s lineup, which includes predecessors like Eleanor Roosevelt, who drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, or Hillary Clinton, the first female presidential nominee from a major political party.
With the scope of history on her mind, Ms. Jellison said she had a hard time summarizing the progress Mrs. Trump had made with “Be Best” compared with the efforts of her predecessors.
“What is this thing?” Ms. Jellison said. “I still want someone to define what it is.”
