The Times Reporter wrote about the New Philadelphia High Science Club’s visit to Ohio University in a story headlined “Phila High Science Club’s Applied Science feature has been going strong for 20 years.”
Jody Brady and Houmard said the focus of the science club is to get kids interested in the subject. While big trips were part of the science club’s past (Costa Rica, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, and white water rafting, to name a few), it has become more common now to make visits closer to home….
The club recently made a visit to Ohio University in Athens for a science specific visit. They had an opportunity to hear from PBIO graduate students working on things like seed germination and seed viability. They also visited the Biology Department and the Edwards Accelerator Lab, which houses a nuclear physics and materials science research laboratory.

The Department of Environmental and Plant Biology helped organize the event. Four graduate students, Kelsey Bryant, Abby Gozka, Sam Lockhart and Al Meyers, with Dr. Thompson, provided hands on activities related to their own projects. The high school students learned how to: use Li-Cor to measure photosynthesis, create herbarium specimens, and read tree rings. They compared green roofs with traditional roofs and learned about sending seeds into space. The students also visited College of Health Sciences and Professions and Russ College of Engineering
