Dr. Dawn Bikowski, director of the English Language Improvement Program, presented her study on assessing global learning in classroom initiatives at the American Educational Research Association annual convention in Toronto in April.
“Presenting at AERA was exciting, as it allowed me to share many of the ideas that have come from our OHIO Faculty Learning Community and from the book that sprung from it,” notes Bikowski. “The study I presented focused on areas where faculty can really make an impact in their students developing values and behaviors consistent with a global perspective—as well as areas where more guidance is needed.”
“Assessment of Global Learning: Faculty Seeking to Minimize Inequities in Higher Education,” the presentation title, reported on a case study from Ohio University, in collaboration with OHIO faculty. “I loved being able to see ways that people across campus are putting ideas from our FLC to work in their own classes, and the positive impact they’re engaging teaching is having on students,” Bikowski points out. “I also really enjoyed the discussions that followed about operationalizing these values into our classrooms in measurable ways.”
Teaching with a Global Perspective: Practical Strategies from Course Design to Assessment (Bikowski & Phillips, 2018, Routledge) provides instructors with strategies to offer students the support they need to build the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of a global citizen, situated within the professor’s own content area.
