The Ohio University Chapter Pi Rho/Tao of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, initiated 12 new members at a Feb. 25 ceremony.
Sigma Delta Pi is the only national honor society recognizing outstanding college and university students of Spanish and requires members to hold a high GPA in Spanish and overall. ¡Felicidades! to the new initiates of Sigma Delta Pi: Alexander Petras, Allison Robertson, Annalee Davis, Carolyn Summerford, Cassidy Selep, Claire McGee, Colleen Cain, Emma Kane, Iyana Davis, Kaitlyn Booher, Liesl Ludwig, Molly Gannaway, and Rory O’Malley.
The ceremony, led by the officers of Sigma Delta Pi, is conducted in Spanish and includes the readings of a poem by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. In addition to the initiates and the officers, the ceremony was attended by members of Sigma Delta Pi, a former adviser of Sigma Delta Pi, Spanish professors who are also Sigma Delta Pi members, and the chair of the Modern Languages Department, Dr. Chris Coski.
The Ohio University chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, Pi Rho/Tao, is an Honor chapter for the year 2018–19. It was founded in 1986 and has inducted more than 450 members. Certification from the Association of College Honor Societies attests to Sigma Delta Pi’s legitimacy and renown, and more than 590 active chapters promote and reward the study of Spanish in U.S. colleges and universities.
