Mathematics Seminar | NBA Heat Maps and the Heat Equation, March 21

The Undergraduate Mathematics Seminar series features Haihai Song discussing “NBA Heat Maps and the Heat Equation” on Thursday, March21, from 5:15 to 6:10 p.m. in Morton 322.

Song is an undergraduate student in Mathematics at Ohio University.

Abstract: A heat map gives a visual way to understand basketball data. The data is analyzed reasonably and effectively so that conclusions can be drawn. The corresponding game strategy and training arrangement can then be formulated and the most valuable player of the season can be judged based on the statistics and analysis of the data. In this presentation, I discuss the relationship between a heat map and the heat equation. I show how to use mathematics and the heat equation to build a heat map. I start by showing heat diffusion in one dimension.

Talks in this seminar series are designed to be accessible to undergraduate mathematics majors, but all are welcome to attend. See more about this seminar series.
