Ohio University students and community members gathered in the Baker Ballroom on Feb. 11 to join Cynthia Graber and Nicola Twilley, hosts of the award winning podcast, Gastropod, for an exciting evening. Graber and Twilley entertained the crowd in Baker Ballroom with their discussion of aphrodisiacs, an interview with local paw paw expert Chris Chmiel, and an interactive tasting with the audience.
Graber and Twilley were invited to Ohio University for the Frontiers in Science Lecture Series. The female duo launched Gastropod in 2014, both coming from established journalism careers. The independent podcast has seen great success in its five years. The episodes explore food through the lens of science and history, covering a broad spectrum of topics through informative yet entertaining conversation.
This was their first visit to Athens, and Graber and Twilley were impressed with the local food and their first taste of paw paw. In addition to their evening lecture, their visit included a trip to Village Bakery, Integration Acres, and a meet and greet with students.
Food Studiestheme faculty and students were especially excited to host Graber and Twilley on campus, as many are devoted listeners of the podcast. Gastropod’s unique and interdisciplinary approach to food journalism closely aligns with the mission of Food Studies at Ohio University.
