Dr. Anthony Stender
Dr. Anthony S. Stender, Assistant Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry at Ohio University, recently attended SciX 2018 in Atlanta.
SciX is an annual conference organized by the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies. The conference provides a forum for discussion of traditional research topics in analytical chemistry as well as cutting-edge instrumental techniques and materials.
At this year’s conference, Stender presented two invited talks. In a session devoted to research on optical and electrochemical properties of nanoparticles, he spoke on “Gold-incorporated mesoporous silica particles as nanosensors.” The presentation was an overview of a paper he published earlier this year in the journal Analytical Chemistry.
“A lot of interesting research has been published on gold nanoparticles that are coated by silica, so-called core-shell particles,” Stender said. “In this work, we had a network of many gold nanoparticles incorporated into a single porous silica particle. The result is much more complex to explain theoretically than a core-shell structure, and we found that the refractive index of these materials make them wonderful candidates for use in sensing applications.”
His other talk was included in a session devoted to early-career development. This talk was titled “Exit strategies and career trajectories: preparing for your future before it arrives.”
“I enjoyed speaking in this session,” he explained. “We actually should have had a bigger room, because it was standing room only. When I first attended SciX in 2015, as a post-doc, I had a lot of questions on my mind about finding a job and establishing my career, so I’m glad that I have been able to offer my advice to younger scientists through this forum. This is actually the third year in a row that I have participated in a career-oriented session at SciX, and based on this year’s interest, I hope it’s something we continue to provide in the future.”
