Associate Professor & Chair of Linguistics
Here in Athens, we are fast moving toward the winter break. The leaves are beginning to fall from the trees, affording the third floor of Gordy Hall a great view of the new construction project at Clippinger. Here in Gordy, our own project of building future global linguists continues unabated.
In this newsletter, you will hear about:
- The global reach of our faculty’s activities in Indonesia, Italy, China, and Japan. Chris Thompson has even joined a flintlock musketeer troupe in Asuke, near Nagoya, as part of his research.
- You will also hear about our ESL teaching outreach. M.A. student Vanessa Torrington ’19 is continuing the long tradition of teaching at East Elementary, and there is news of an exciting new practicum experience in a small community school in Yunguilla, high in the Cloud Forest of Ecuador.
- We also bring you news of our Japanese and Chinese language programs: the exciting opportunities including fellowships, corporate experience, and study abroad available for students in the Japanese Program and news of a brilliantly successful alumnus of the Chinese program.
- And lastly we update you on news of our faculty teaching: Meet Chris Cho, our new visiting professor, and her fascinating research on emotion intonation, and Art Oestrike, faculty member of ELIP, M.A. Linguistics alum ’02, and owner of Jackie O’s Brewery, who is teaching a new course: the Art of Craft Brewing.
And now I want to ask our alumni for your help and to invite you to campus. In January, the College of Arts & Sciences will be holding our college-wide Career and Networking Week, Jan. 28 to Feb. 2, 2019. We would love to have more experienced alumni come back and talk about your work experiences and help with networking or resume review. And we would also love to see our recent grads come back and network to help get your careers moving. It will be brisk in Athens at that time, but you always know that there will be plenty of warmth for you in Gordy. RSVP or contact me at belld@ohio.edu.
And just a reminder that you don’t have to wait until the next newsletter to find out what we are up to – you can like our Facebook page, and follow along.
Best Wishes
David Bell
