“Songs of the Loom: Reading Kabir, Singing Kabir,” a talk by Professor Madhu Singh from the University of Lucknow in India, is Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7.15 p.m. in Bentley 120.
A great mystic from the 15th century, Kabir was poet and mystic who saw God as nirakar (formless), nirgun (without attributes), and niranjan (absolutely pure and flawless). He remains an intriguing and a widely admired figure in India and elsewhere among Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs in particular and is frequently translated into English.
Among other things, this talk will compare several English translations of the same hymn to understand what compels the translators, Indian and foreign, to return to and evoke Kabir in shifting socio-cultural contexts.
