The Physics & Astronomy Colloquium Series presents Ken Showalter, of West Virginia University, on “Chemical Oscillator Chimeras: Seemingly Impossible Dynamical States” on Friday, Oct. 5, at 4:10 p.m. in Clippinger Labs 194.
Abstract: I will present an overview of our studies of reaction-diffusion behavior and coupled oscillator dynamics. Effects of heterogeneity and noise on propagating chemical waves and stabilized and controlled wave segments will be described. I will present our studies of synchronization and quorum sensing transitions in populations of globally coupled chemical oscillators. Our studies of chimera and chimera-like states in populations of photochemically coupled oscillators will be described. Finally, I will present our studies of spiral wave chimeras in large arrays of photochemically coupled oscillators.
